Insulin Sensitivity and Infertility Link PCOS

PCOS News

PCOS Research In MiceIt is beginning to be more common for women to have infertility problems in todays modern world, with PCOS being a major cause of these problems. Insulin sensitivity within the pituitary and the ovaries could be the real cause of infertility as discussed in the report published in the Diabetes journal November 10.

Research on PCOS

Scientists at the John Hopkins Children’s Centre have been researching on mice and have discovered that in obese mice, the pituitary glands and ovaries escape the insulin resistance found in other organs. What this means is that insulin resitance in type 2 diabetes women who are overweight is not the cause of infertility. This has long been thought to be the primary suspect when it came to fertility problems in women with PCOS and Type-2 Diabetes, but scientists have discovered that in lean mice, the ovaries and pituitary glands are insensitive to insulin where as obese mice were sensitive.

PCOS and Obesity

The main point of this finding is that obesity could still be the cause of infertility amongst PCOS sufferers and by losing the weight will increase fertility as well as lower insulin resistance.
